A Guide on How to Lose Weight Fast
A question to which researchers have many different answers and from which pharmaceutical companies make millions. However, the answer is in fact simple. You need to distinguish though between losing weight fast for the short-term and losing weight which stays off! You can go on a diet whereby you eat very little and thus end up very skinny, but let’s face it, you can’t keep this up and you will soon start eating a lot to make up for what you have lost – no matter how determined you are to keep it up! Alternatively, you can reduce your calorie intake, exercise more and lose 2lbs a week which will actually stay off. You may desire the former as an instant result, but what you need is the latter if you are to keep the weight off. The latter involves determination but it is not rocket science. Even if the below advice is blatantly obvious, the fact that you are reading this means that something is not going right, so you still have something to learn.
Exercise and eat less – You can’t have one without the other. It is all very well eating only 1,250 calories a day, but you won’t lose weight if you are not burning off more than your body needs to function. Think of it as burning off two layers of fat – the fat you consume through ordinary calorie intake each day and the lingering fat you are desperately trying to get rid of!
How long to exercise for? – If you read the above and said ‘I am exercising!’ but you are still not losing weight, then are you doing more than 30 minutes? You need to exercise for at least 20 minutes for your body to start working on the deeper layers of fat. Exercise up to 20 minutes just helps burn off your daily calorie intake but won’t shed the pounds!
Cut the juice, go for the water – Water not only flushes out toxins which are preventing your weight loss, but it will also not send you craving for sugar! It is a very useful neturaliser if you know you have a sweet tooth and taste buds that tend to tingle when you think of something sweet. Orange juice may sound very healthy and good, but it will have your craving for something sugary and will do nothing for those pounds you are trying to lose! Water will also fill you up, which is a key point if you need to suppress your appetite for nibbling!
Fixed meal times! We are creatures of habit. Our brains know sub-consciously when there should be a meal and it will certainly be sending you signals if you are late. A late dinner will almost certainly need to snacking and unnecessary calories.
Savour your food – your body will not appreciate that you had fed it unless you have spent 20 minutes eating it. This is exactly why snacks never fill us up. Whether we have consumed a 300 calorie chocolate bar or 600 calorie deep-filled sandwich, you will not feel satisfied if you have simply wolfed it down. Your brain will not register it and will send signals asking for something else.
Follow your stomach, not your head! A lot of diet is to do with mind over matter. Often you will find yourself eating when you are not hungry, but merely bored, stressed or need a distraction. Your brain is always ready for food and the slightest desire from you that you feel like nibbling will be happily indulged by your brain sending signals telling you to get something. But stop! Think about whether you are actually hungry. Do you need to eat? Is your stomach rumbling and you feel like you cannot focus or perform 100% if you do not eat? Learn to tell the difference…it is a fundamental skill if you are to lose weight.
Little and often? If you like eating little and often, then do so! Sometimes having 3 main meals is too much if we are used to nibbling. Instead of 3 main meals which are quite far apart, try having 6 mini meals. You will be consuming the same amount of calories yet they will be spaced out, giving you the chance to cut out unhealthy ‘nibbling’ of high calorific snacks.
I cannot emphasise enough that losing weight is really a question of mind over matter. Stay focused on your goal, listen to your stomach and above all eat less and exercise more. There is nothing more to it.
